Louella THAM brings checks and balances to the council.
Louella Tham immigrated to the United States at age 12 with her family in 1984 from Hong Kong. They first settled in Langley Park, Maryland, then moved to Montgomery County. She attended Montgomery County Public Schools at Springbrook and graduated from Kennedy high school in Wheaton. She is a proud product of MCPS.
She went on to the University of Maryland at College Park as an off-campus student commuting everyday. She did this while holding a full time job to pay for college by herself as a teller at Citizens Bank of Maryland at Glenmont Shopping Center; right here in District 6. During those years she took metro buses commuting to and from College Park.
Louella has lived in Montgomery County, in District 6 most of her life. This is her hometown.
She never set out to hold public office or take a government job. Throughout her adult life she has volunteered in many capacities; serving the homeless and hungry with different national non-profits and leading many recycling, composting and waste-reduction programs before it was popular to do so. She is also currently serving as VP on her community board helping make good decision in matters of safety and budget management with efficiency and ROI as well as neighbors priorities in mind as main guidance.
The past few years, she's noticed Montgomery County has lagged behind in areas of economics, safety and infrastructure. Taxes are increasing astronomically, small businesses are suffering, traffic is gridlocked and there is a significant shortage of policemen.
After praying about the next chapter of her career, she felt encouraged to run—not as a career politician, but as another form of service; an extension of volunteering. She wants to make a difference in Montgomery County and help put it back on a responsible path while listening to the people who live here; to get the people what they need for their hometown.
Professionally, Louella has worked in administrative roles, financial banking, and marketing. She is now in sales, with top closing rates and is experienced in contracts and negotiations. Her real world experience belongs on the council. If the County did nothing else but examine the contracts it signs, it could save taxpayers a great deal of money. We should put those dollars back to work for the People in a responsible way.
Louella has also been a champion for the environment her whole life. As a Green Mission Specialist at Whole Foods Market, she learned what real sustainability looks like practiced in real life. In Montgomery County, she says, too many “green” efforts are expensive without being green. She wants to revamp the County’s green mission so it is actually sustainable, effective, and cost-conscious—taking care of the earth without wasting the People's money.
Louella is running because this is home, because she has watched it change not for the better, and because she believes practical experience, community service, and fiscal discipline can help rescue Montgomery County for the people who live here.
GOD led me to this campaign
and in God I trust.
Evidence, the Constitution and the People will be all that guide my decision making.
